How often do you go to the dentist?

Visiting the dentist regularly is essential for maintaining good oral health and preventing potential problems with your teeth and gums. But how often should you visit the dentist? The answer largely depends on your individual dental health condition and risk factors.

How often should you go to the dentist?

Red patients

Red patients generally have a high risk of dental problems and require frequent dental follow-up.

Red patients can include people with previous dental problems such as caries or gingivitis, people with chronic diseases such as diabetes or autoimmune disorders, and patients who either have poor oral hygiene habits or who smoke.

Red, yellow or green patient

Since 2015, all dentists use a system of red, yellow and green patients to assess how often a person should visit the dentist.

For red patients, it is typically recommended to visit the dentist every 3-4 months to maintain optimal oral health and prevent future problems.

Yellow patients

Yellow patients have a moderate risk of dental problems and should therefore also have regular visits to the dentist, but at slightly longer intervals than red patients. These may include people with previous dental problems but who have improved their oral hygiene habits or have gotten their condition under control.

For yellow patients, it is typically recommended to visit the dentist every 6 months to ensure maintenance of good dental health and early detection of any problems.

Green patients

Green patients generally have a low risk of dental problems and can therefore make fewer visits to the dentist as long as they maintain good oral hygiene at home.

These patients often have no or minimal dental issues and can visit the dentist annually for a routine checkup and cleaning. However, it's still important for green patients to keep up to date with their dentist to ensure no problems develop over time.

Ask your dentist and follow the recommendations

No matter which category you fall into, it's important to communicate openly with your dentist about your dental health and follow their recommendations for regular dental visits. By prioritizing prevention and maintenance, you can maintain a healthy and radiant smiling mouth for years to come.
